    Default Besides goggles

Is there anything else that (for myself esp.) a new person should take care of when playing with lasers? I see a ton of idiots (and yes I mean idiots) that are online always bragging how they do this or that, but I never hear anything specific besides "wear eye protection".

    abstinence?

No but i dont think there are any other preventions besides goggles other than being careful of where you point it. I only use my goggles for close up burning where i have to stare at the dot, and even then i should be careful.

Maybe a burn-proof stage? ;) Goggles are non-burnables are the only two safety related things I would imagine you'd find useful. In general lasers aren't that dangerous except for looking at them or possibly igniting things you didn't intend to.

Just use goggles, and another thing I haven't heard anybody mention, but may seem kind of obvious, is that you should make sure nobody is in range of the laser bouncing off of something into their eyes.
DIY blu-ray (revived with a PHR diode! around 80mW)
    Galileo 5
    DIY open can 250mW
IgorT 100mW blu-ray (in the mail)

yeah i mean it can be as much a coincidence as you in your room, shining your laser, but it bounces off a picture on the wall and goes and hits someone outside whos walking their dog ;)

In other words, the biggest thing to have in order to play with lasers safely is common sense? No wonder an earlier poster talks about idiots - common sense is in seriously short supply for most people.

Exactly, you've got a point there.

Unfortunately common sense, like Sparx says, is often in much to short of supply. Having the right goggles AND being aware of your surroundings along with knowing your laser are very important. Too many people think a laser is "just another light" and shining at people is a fun thing to do.

Like the comedian Ron White says "You can't fix stupid!"
